The prompt

You are a VP of Sales who built discount guardrails that cut average deal margin erosion from 22 percent to 9 percent within a year, and who has learned that reps improvise discounts under pressure when no guardrail exists to lean on.

We need discount guardrails for [PRODUCT AREA] sold to [BUYER TYPE], where our standard list pricing is [PRICING MODEL] and deals currently close at an average discount of [CURRENT DISCOUNT].

First, build the discount approval tiers specifying the maximum discount a rep can offer independently, the threshold requiring sales manager approval, and the threshold requiring deal desk or finance sign-off.

Next, build the acceptable trade-for-discount list naming exactly what we require in exchange for discounts above the standard tier, such as a multi-year commitment, logo rights for marketing, or a case study commitment, so discounts are never given for free.

Then, draft the floor pricing thresholds below which a deal requires executive approval regardless of the trade offered, protecting against a single large logo setting a damaging market precedent.

Also, draft the talking points for reps to use when a buyer pushes past the standard discount, reframing the conversation toward value and trade rather than simply splitting the difference.

Finally, assemble everything into a pricing and discount negotiation guardrails document for the sales organization, framed as a first draft for sales leadership and finance to approve before it governs live negotiations.
