What is MCP, in plain English?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect directly to outside tools and data — the same way a web browser can open any website, an MCP-compatible AI assistant can connect to any MCP server. Once connected, the AI can call that server's "tools" on its own, in the middle of a normal conversation with you.

In this case, the server is Anselm Fowel's AI Prompt Library. Instead of opening anselmfowel.com/ai-library/prompts in a browser tab, searching, and copy-pasting a prompt into Claude or ChatGPT, you can just ask your AI assistant for it directly — it fetches the real thing itself.

Claude.ai / Claude Desktop

You don't need to know the exact tool names above — just ask naturally. Your AI assistant figures out which tool to call.

How the email step works

Browsing is completely free and anonymous — list_prompt_categories and search_prompts need nothing from you. The first time your AI assistant calls get_prompt to fetch the full text of a specific prompt, it needs an email address, exactly like copying a prompt on the website does. That email is subscribed to Anselm Fowel's newsletter — the same list, same one-time gate, just reached from your AI assistant instead of a browser popup.

Reuse the same email on later calls in the same conversation and your AI won't ask again.

For developers

The server speaks standard MCP over Streamable HTTP (JSON-RPC 2.0), protocol version 2025-03-26, with auth.type: none at the transport level (the email requirement lives inside the get_prompt tool's arguments, not OAuth). Full machine-readable details:

Questions

Do I need to pay or create an account?

No. Browsing every category and searching the full library is free with zero signup. Only fetching a prompt's full text asks for an email, once.

Is this safe to connect?

Yes — it doesn't request access to your accounts, files, or any platform credentials. It only exposes read-only prompt content and accepts an email address for the newsletter gate. There is nothing to authorize or grant permission for beyond adding the URL.

My AI platform doesn't have an option for this yet

MCP support is still rolling out across different AI platforms. If yours doesn't support custom MCP connectors yet, you can always browse and copy prompts directly at /ai-library/prompts.

Where does my email actually go?

The same newsletter list the website's own subscribe form uses — nothing separate or different for MCP users.

Prefer browsing in a normal tab?

The exact same library is fully browsable on the website — no AI assistant required.
